This day is the thirteenth day of the fortnight of Kartik and the start of Diwali. This is the start of Diwali celebration. People decorate their houses. Many people start to decorate their houses before few days of Diwali. On this day people lighten diyas in front of their home.

Dhanteras has special importance for wealth. This day is also considered as good for shopping. At evening people do the prayer to Ganesha and goddess Lakshmi. They offer puffed rice or rice cake and battashaya as a naivedya to these gods. So this is the main significance of Diwali Dhanteras.

Another significance of dhanteras is that Dhanteras means day to pray God Dhanvantari which is God of Health and health and healing. Dhanvantari considered as the god of Ayurveda.

Choti Diwali or Narak Chaturdashi  – 2nd Day of Diwali

This is another important day of Diwali. This is the fourteenth day of the second fortnight of the lunar month. According to mythology, this day is celebrated because on this day Lord Krishna killed demon narkasur and made 16000 princes free from jail which was kidnapped by narkasur.

Another significance of Narak chaturdasi as follows, Narak means hell. This narak chaturdasi day considered as day to liberate the soul from suffering in Hell or “Naraka”. Many people eat delicious sweet dishes on this day.

In Maharashtra and some other state people take a spiritual bath called as abhyanga seen in the early morning. Chandan Powder or Utne is used while bathing for fragrance.

This is the main day of Diwali. This day is most significant and important for the Diwali festival. This is the day to worship the goddess, Lakshmi. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and by worshiping everyone wants to invite her at home. To expecting more wealth and happiness from goddess Lakshmi. This day is also important for businessmen. They decorate their shops and offices. The decoration is done by flowers and chains of flowers. Everyone wears new dresses in the morning and evening. In south and Gujarat, this day is celebrated as Annakut (heap of grains). This annakut is made by the mix of hundred dishes and kept in front of the God Krishna statue. This annakut is then distributed among the people.

In west and north side of India, this day is celebrated as Govardhan Pooja. This Govardhan pooja is related to a story of Lord Krishna in which he lifted Govardhan mountain and saved cowherds.

This is the last day of Diwali. This day celebrates the bond between brother and sister. It is like Raksha Bandhan but without rakhi. On this day brother goes to sisters home and gives a gift to sister. On this day sister do prayers and pooja for the health and happiness of her brother. In Maharashtra this day called as Bhau Beej.

In Sikh community, this day also celebrated as Vishwakarma pooja. Vishwakarma is Hindu god of architecture, building, and manufacturing.
