Selection Process:

  • Civil Services Examination consists of two successive steps.
  • Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (objective type) for the selection of candidates for the main examination, and
  • Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for various services and posts.

1. Preliminary Examination:

UPSC Civil Services Selection Procedure Details – In the preliminary examination, two papers of Objective type (Multiple Choice) will be included and in subsection (A) of Section II, a maximum of 400 marks in prescribed subjects. This test is to serve as a screening test only; Only those candidates who are declared passed by the Commission in the preliminary examination in the year, they will be eligible for admission in the main examination of that year, provided they are eligible for admission in the main examination.

2. Main examination:

The main exam will include a written examination and an interview examination.

(A) Written examination:

In the written examination, in the subjects given in the written examination, 9 papers of traditional essay type will be included, out of which two paper qualifying will be of nature. Each paper will be of three hours. Candidates will have the option of answering all the question papers, except in English or Hindi, except Paper-I (Understanding English and Priority of English). Such candidates, who receive such minimum qualifying marks in the written part of the main examination, which can be decided by the Commission at their discretion, will be called for interview or for a personality test. The number of candidates called for the interview will be almost double by the number of vacancies.

Note: The marks obtained in the preliminary examination by the candidates declared eligible for admission to the main examination will not be counted for determining the final order of their qualifications. The number of candidates joining the main examination will be around 12 to 13 times the estimated approximate number of vacancies to be filled in various services and posts in a year. (B) Interview Test:

There will be 275 points (with minimum qualifying marks) in the interview. The candidate will be interviewed by a board, who will keep a record of his career in front of him. He will be asked questions on matters of general interest. The objective of the interview is to assess and evaluate the individual’s suitability of the candidate’s candidature for a career in public service by the board of unbiased supervisors.

(C) Final selection:

In this way, the marks obtained by the candidates in the main examination (written part as well as interviews) will determine their final ranking. Keeping in view the priorities expressed by the candidates for their rank in the examination and various services and posts, the various services will be allocated.
